Hi All,

Way back in the 1980s the, then very influential, Computer Society of Zimbabwe used to hold an annual week-long Nyanga conference alternating between the Troutbeck and Montclair Hotels. They always invited leading authorities in computing and accounting, like chairman John Dawson, to give lectures and lead discussions on recent trends. Computers were in their infancy, so most of us participants were under 40. At the end of most days a few of us keen golfers would play 9 holes of golf either at Troutbeck or Claremont. 

Both are challenging 9-hole courses that were fastidiously maintained by the local Nyanga farmers. Years later, I would join a big group of mates for an annual golf tournament playing 18 holes on each of these courses. In recent times I’d heard that the Claremont course had had renewed interest, so I stopped by after my run last Saturday to find out more. I arrived just in time to see a few of the faithful weekend golfers teeing off the first tee. There were even a couple of guys that had travelled up from Rusape. There is also a pair of Zebra wandering around the estate

Those of you that have played at Claremont might well remember the first hole where one must drive well left for fairway shots to bounce down the slope towards a final location on the right. Wayward shots that were pushed right were always accompanied by shouts of “That’s my Mulligan for today!” Then, of course, there is the third hole placed atop a very steep incline where big hitters often saw their golf balls disappear into the surrounding montane grasses of Nyanga – say no more!

It turns out that a group of committed locals headed by Rob and Debbie Lindsay have taken over the management of Claremont. Lots of time and money has seemingly been invested in returning the Claremont Golf course to its former glory. Dave and Sarah Martins have taken over the management of the club house and have already started reintroducing tasteful meals with plans underway for a new look and feel. They will also now be running the Claremont Farm stall that you see on your right as you pass by Claremont Estate. Make sure you support their cause by stopping by on your next trip to Nyanga

Claremont is just an hour away from Mutare and Rusape. They are holding a small competition at Claremont this coming Saturday that promises to be lots of fun. Why not take time out this weekend to support their efforts. The greens are in good condition as are the bunkers and the course if very playable.
